Is Blogging Still Relevant? A Look at Why It Might Be Perfect for You

A friend and former colleague in the radio industry posted a question on Facebook that caught my eye a little while ago: "Is blogging still a thing?" It made me smile – after all, blogging is how I pay some of my bills. But more importantly, it reminded me of that moment when I was wondering the same thing.

You see, this friend is one of the smartest people I know. He has a wicked sense of humor and a unique worldview. In short, I knew he'd make a fantastic blogger. So, for my smart and funny friend considering the blogging world and anyone else who wonders if it's still relevant, here's my take.

What is a blog, anyway?

At its core, a blog is an online space where someone shares their thoughts, ideas, knowledge, or experiences. It's like a personal journal but published for the world to see (if you choose!). People blog for tons of reasons:

  • Creative outlet: Blogging provides a platform for self-expression and sharing passions.
  • Community building: A blog can foster a community of like-minded people who connect over shared interests.
  • Establishing expertise: Consistent, informative blogging helps position you as an expert in your chosen field.
  • Money-making potential: Yes, some people make serious money just by blogging (we'll get to that!).

Blogging: More Important Than You Think

It's true; these days, it seems like everyone's glued to their phones, scrolling vertically on social media. It's addictive!  But here's the thing: when people need answers or in-depth information, they head over to Google (who uses Bing anyway, right?).

A well-optimized blog that's set up correctly shows up in these search results. That means potential readers find you – and that's the magic of blogging! Consistent traffic is what helps turn your efforts into potential income.

Why my smart, funny friend should definitely start blogging

Jett, your writing needs to be out in the world! You have a way of making complex subjects hilarious, and you can turn ordinary situations into side-splitting stories. I'm certain people would read and love your stuff. But beyond your natural talent, good bloggers share some key qualities:

  • Passionate: You love learning, geeking out over specific topics, and sharing your finds.
  • Consistent: Blogging success is built on showing up regularly with fresh content.
  • Willing to learn: The world of blogging has some technical aspects, but they're learnable.

Okay, but about the money...

Let's be real; nobody gets into blogging expecting to get rich overnight. Plus, monetizing isn't always easy. Google AdSense (that's often a blogger's first step) is notoriously strict.  It took me over a year before I got approved! However, there are other legitimate ways to earn from a successful blog:

  • Affiliate marketing: Get paid to recommend products or services.
  • Sponsored posts: Companies may pay you to write about their stuff.
  • Your own products/services: Blogs drive traffic towards things you sell.

It takes time, effort, and building an audience for the money to start rolling in, but it's possible.

Jett, it's time.

If you're even considering blogging, I fully support you!  Think about topics that fire you up, and start brainstorming titles. I'm excited for you!  Want to collaborate on a post? Drop me a line and let's choose something fun.

As the saying goes, "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now." Let's get those blog posts growing!
